The annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks fundraising events raise millions of dollars to fund autism research and help raise autism awareness.

Walk Now for Autism, a series of fundraising events that are part of the Autism Speaks organization, has raised more than $27 million in donations for its 2009-2010 events. The events not only raise funds for autism research but they also help to raise autism awareness.

The following Walk Now for Autism events are scheduled for California and Florida in 2010.

California Autism Walks

On April 17, 2010, the Sonoma Walk Now for Autism fundraising event will be held at the Infineon Raceway. Registration for the events begins at 9:00 am and the walk commences at 10:00 am. In 2009, more than 1,000 walkers raised $75,000 at the Sonoma Walk Now for Autism event.

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena will host the Walk Now for Autism Speaks: Los Angeles fundraiser on April 24, 2010. Walkers will be able to participate in one of two events scheduled for the day: a three-mile route and then a second route that will consist of laps around the Rose Bowl stadium. Unfortunately, pets will not be allowed at the Los Angeles Walk Now for Autism event.

The Walk Now for Autism Speaks: Bay Area 2010 event will be held at History Park in San Jose on Saturday, June 5, 2010. The 2009 Bay Area walk raised more than a quarter million dollars from the nearly 3,500 walkers that participated.

Florida Autism Walks

Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida will host the 2010 Miami-Dade Walk Now for Autism Speaks fundraiser. Registration begins at 8:00 am with the walk starting at 10:00 am. On February 22, 2009, nearly 12,000 walkers descended on Key Biscayne to raise autism awareness and gather more than $400,000 in donations.

On March 7, 2010, Autism Speaks supporters will meet at Centennial Square in Downtown West Palm Beach to raise funds for autism research. Although the venue allows pets, event organizers have asked that walk attendees leave pets at home because many children are afraid of animals.

The remaining Walk Now for Autism Speaks scheduled for Florida in 2010 include:

  • Jensen Beach High School, Jensen Beach on March 20, 2010
  • Sherman Library Green at Nova Southeastern University in Davie on April 17, 2010
  • North Straub Park in St. Petersburg on May 1, 2010

Money raised from the Walk Now for Autism Speaks events allows the organization to provide grants to community centers dedicated to serving the autism community, offer resources to families of children newly diagnosed with autism, fund scientific research, and support autism advocacy efforts.
