Message from Phillip C. DeMio, MD

Dr. DeMio is the Chief Medical Officer of the USAAA and has made this statement regarding the 2008 conference. “Throughout this conference, it is our hope that you'll find a balance of concepts and pragmatics, from current protocols to research, including biomedical, developmental, and behavioral realms, right down to tools that you can use immediately to begin or add to those needed for your journey.”

Featured Speakers

The 2008 conference will feature 31 of the world’s leading experts in the field of autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Doris Rapp, the author of the bestseller Is This Your Child?, will be leading a discussion on Friday, September 5 – Discovering and Treating Unrecognized Allergies in Children and Adults. According to the USAAA website, “Dr. Rapp is a board-certified environmental medical specialist and pediatric allergist. She is also a homeopath.”

Another well-known speaker appearing at the conference is Dr. James Neubrander. The conference materials call Dr. Neubrander the “father” of MB-12 therapy for autism; additionally, Dr. Neubrander also leads the medical community in researching the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Dr. Neubrander will be discussing the financial aspects of autism spectrum disorders at the USAAA conference.

CEU Accreditation

Conferences such as the USAAA event are a great place for professionals in the field of autism to obtain much-needed continuing education units (CEUs). It is a shame that there was not more promotion of this event to the therapy community. As an OT or PT working with this population you appear to have left us out of the mix. The admission fees are so high that it is exclusive to most families to attend. The cost appears to be geared toward professionals seeking CEUs. You missed a whole 2 sections of therapists when you FAILED to secure CEU credit for OT and PT. There is no way that most of us would pay $85-$310 for a conference where we can not obtain CEUs. Most of my colleagues had not heard about the conference until we saw it on the news 8/28/08. From the looks of it you will commpletely miss an opportunity to represent the work that OT and PT provide, and you will only be promoting the contributions of ONE DISCIPLINE. Such poor planning. Too bad, so sad.

As a parent I'm also disappointed that I knew nothing about this conference. I would have loved to have time to save up the money and attend.
